Honors Degree Programs in Near Eastern Studies

MELC offers students the opportunity to pursue the Near Eastern Studies major as an honors major. There are two levels of honors programs at the University of Washington: College Honors and Departmental Honors. For the differences, see the general University website discussing the distinction between the two.

MELC majors who have not been admitted to the College Honors program may request to be admitted to the MELC departmental honors program if they meet all four of the following requirements:

  1. Students will be admitted only by MELC faculty nomination, students may convey their interest in the honors track to any MELC faculty member;

  2. Prior to admission to the departmental honors program a student must have taken at least one advanced 300-level course in MELC (this does not include elementary and intermediate language courses);

  3. the student must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 overall and 3.7 in courses required for the MELC major;

  4. the student must successfully complete an honors thesis, written over the course of two quarters under the supervision of a faculty advisor; the expectations for this honors thesis are substantially higher than those for the senior essay.

MELC majors who are also in the College Honors program must complete the above minimum requirements.
